 He was dying.

There was no denying it anymore. He had
lost the use of both of his legs and he was positive most of his vital organs had shut down. He could have given up, just lay down and let the poison take its effect. The TARDIS would simply stop repairing the damage she had sustained and they could die together, an old couple passing peacefully. He could, that is, had it not been for the fact that Amy and Rory were still in mortal danger. Pain shot through his body for hundredth time that evening, thanks to the lovely poison.

The Doctor was very aware of how foolish he must look as he dragged himself out of the TARDIS and towards his dear friend's miniature prison. Thankfully, he didn't care about how he looked at that point. Just as thankfully, there wasn't anyone around to see. Except, perhaps, for HER.

A wave of hate washed over him as he cast a glance towards Melody. Look at her! Her parents and childhood friends were about to die, and she just SAT THERE, watching. River would never give up, not when people she loved were in danger. Not when there was a fight to be fought. The Doctor had to remind himself that this was not River.

And now,she probably won't ever be, He thought sadly as his arms finally gave out on the steps. All those great adventures they've had,all the good times that were still to come that now would never come. He felt a warm yet mournful feeling wash over him. As much as he hated to admit it,some of his best memories in this body were spending time with River, even when they fought. He hated her, true. Very much. But still, he would be lying if he said his hearts didn't skip a beat whenever he saw her. If  he said he didn't savor every moment with her. And, he realized frustratedly and with great annoyance and shock, if he said he didn't love her.

The admission of this upset the Doctor more than words could describe.

The sound of Melody's voice penetrated his thoughts. He couldn't quite hear her, though,as his senses were starting to give. Not that he wanted to listen to her anyway. Something about saving his friends? He couldn't tell. Wait! He told himself. She's going into the TARDIS!

The lovely chime of his dearest friend's voice sounded as she teleported away. She's saving them! The Doctor thought excitedly. He forced himself to stay conscious a little longer so he could bid Amy and Rory farewell. He could die happy. In the meantime, he resumed his reflection.

He thought again of River, and how horribly wonderful she was. Guess we won't end up married after all, he thought bemusedly. Just then a sudden thought hit the Doctor as hard as a blow to the abdomen, (a pain he could not accredit to the poison this time) and made him feel as if a bolt of lightning struck his hearts and split them in two.

He would never see River Song again.
And he never told her he loved her.

Distress filled the Doctor head to toe. It buzzed inside him like bees that refused to stop stinging. He got fed up with her often, and they never got along (save for the flirting), but he had seen her go through immense pain and eventually death for him. He felt terrible, treating her like a jerk when she expressed only love for him. He didn't know who she was then, and didn't truly know how much he'd grow to care for her, but he still wished that he could go back and slap himself. She was a psychotic murderer, and didn't deserve most things, but she did deserve to be told that he cared so strongly for her. He would never get another chance to say so, and she wasn't even there. Just as he thought this, the TARDIS reappeared and his three friends stepped out, unharmed.

Not here YET, he corrected himself.

Amy and Rory came and sat next to him. The Doctor tried to speak, but found he could raise his voice just over a whisper. He gave his two companions a standard good bye. Be good, love each other, stay safe, take care of your daughter. Afterwards he had dear Amelia Pond call over the daughter in question.

Melody walked over and kneeled by him. Her face was so full of that concern he seen many times before. He might have even laughed, had he not been slipping out of consciousness. Time to hurry things up and get down to business.

"I need you to tell River Song something for me." He started, his voice giving out just as he finished the sentence. Thankfully, Melody leaned in so he could whisper.

"What is it?" She asked urgently.

"Please, tell her I love her." He couldn't keep his eyes open much longer. Everything started to fade.

"I think she already knows." Melody chuckled.

And with that, the Doctor died.

  To wake up again.

It took Doctor a minute to register what was happening. Gold swam around his vision, and he could feel his body slowly rebooting. As his sense of touch came back,he could feel a light pressure on his lips, and realized that Melody-no, River, he was sure of it- was kissing him. It took about the same amount of time for him to remember that Amy and Rory were watching, and substantially less time than that to feel embarrassed about it. Soon River collapsed on the floor beside him. The Doctor pondered the events that had just occurred, and came to the conclusion that River had just given him all her future regenerations. He then immediately felt very protective of her.

He stood up, brushed himself off, and asked his stunned companions to carry River on to the TARDIS (who he figured was done repairing by now) so he could bring her to the hospital in New New York, where she could recover. They carefully lifted her inside and lay her on the chair. As the Doctor was leaving to change back into his normal clothes, he looked back at the scene behind him. His half-human-half-Time Lord girlfriend inside of his newly fixed TARDIS, being guarded by his two best friends who just learned they had been parents their whole lives.

  What an odd day.
